MP worried about food prices - 5 April
Labour MP Sandra Osborne has said that she is horrified by recent figures which show that food prices have risen considerably over the last year.
Sandra said:
My office has recently received official cost of living figures which show that there has been a 4% rise in food prices over the last year . These figures establish once and for all that food prices have increased more than earnings putting enormous pressure on family budgets.
Sandra said that a wide ranging approach was required to respond to the crisis of rising food prices . Sandra revealed that she was supporting a bill in parliament to place a duty on large supermarkets and large manufacturers to donate a proportion of their surplus food for distribution to charities. She also said that she was aware that some local organisations were discussing the setting up of Foodbanks to distribute surplus food and she would do everything she could to support this type of project.
Sandra concluded by saying:
Whilst I will be supporting efforts by charities to respond to rising food prices I will continue to push for Government action to get jobs and growth back into the economy so that people can go the local supermarket and shops without worrying all the time about how to pay for food and other essentials.
