MP Seeks Assurances from Barr Following Announcement of Closure of Solway Steel
Sandra Osborne MP has today met with management of local company Barr regarding the closure of the Solway Steel part of the business.
Sandra said:
‘I have been assured that every effort was made to keep the company going but that there is no sustainable work available and this has led to the closure with 80 redundancies. I have sought assurances from management with regard to the treatment of workers who are losing their jobs. I have been informed that the company will do its best to deal flexibly with individuals during the run down of the business in accordance with the needs of the business to fulfil its contractual obligations and that everyone will receive their statutory redundancy entitlement. The JobCentre Plus PACE team are involved in helping them to look for alternative employment.
‘It is worrying that I am getting reports from a number of businesses involved in construction about the difficulties they are currently facing in securing business and the threat to employment that this brings. Neither Westminster nor Holyrood Governments are doing enough to bring forward capital projects to help stimulate the economy and support business.’
