Public Meeting on Labour’s Better Way
Labour MP Sandra Osborne is urging people to come along to a public meeting on 4th November to hear Labour’s ‘Better Way – an alternative to the Tory led Government’s cuts on services and jobs’
The meeting is in Ayr Town Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 4th November and the speakers include Johann Lamont MSP, the Deputy Leader of Labour in the Scottish Parliament, STUC Assistant General Secretary, Stephen Boyd and Councillor John McDowall, Labour Leader on South Ayrshire Council.
Sandra who will chair the meeting said:
‘The Tory led Government’s austerity plan is hurting but it isn’t working. There is a better way – a real plan for jobs and growth to get our economy moving again and to help get the deficit down in a more balanced way. We need to get the message across as well as put pressure on the Government to change course.’
‘This week marked the one-year anniversary of the Government’s Spending Review and decision to cut the deficit further and faster than any other major economy.’
‘These out of touch, out of date plans simply haven’t worked. The economy hasn’t grown at all in the last year, inflation is soaring and unemployment is at its highest for 17 years. In Ayr Carrick & Cumnock the number on Job Seekers Allowance has risen to almost 3,000 – that’s more than 200 up on last year.’
‘We need to make this Tory-led Government understand how tough things really are for families, pensioners and businesses. Labour has called for an Emergency Budget in Parliament last week to get things back on track. Our 5-point plan for jobs and growth calls for:
A £2 billion tax on bank bonuses to fund 100,000 jobs for young people and build 25,000 more affordable homes.
Bring forward investment projects like new school buildings.
Temporarily reverse the VAT rise – a £450 boost for families with children.
Cut VAT on home improvements to 5% for a year.
A tax break for every small firm which takes on extra workers.
You will be able to hear more about Labour’s Better Way at the meeting as well as having the opportunity to make your views known’
Ends
