MP Attacks Government Pension Changes Which Will See Over One Thousand Local Women in their 50s Lose Some of Their Retirement Income
Sandra Osborne MP today attacked the Coalition Government over accelerating the increase in the State Pension Age which will affect 1300 women in Ayr Carrick and Cumnock Constituency.
Sandra said:
‘The Government plans to accelerate the increase in women’s State Pension Age and then increase it to 66 for everyone more quickly than previously planned. This will mean that around 1300 women in their mid-50s in Ayr Carrick and Cumnock Constituency alone will have to work for one or two years longer than they had previously thought. All with very little time to prepare. I believe that this is extremely unfair.
‘Women aged around 56/57 will be hit particularly hard and the Pension Credit age will rise so rapidly that some of the poorest pensioners will lose around 10% of their total retirement income.’
‘There is a clear equality issue here. Women are already at a significant disadvantage in terms of pension provision – the median pension saving of a 56 year old woman is just £9,100; almost 6 times lower than that of a man which stands at £52,800. The acceleration of the increase in state pension age only adds salt to the wound.’
Sandra added:
‘The unions are campaigning vociferiously on this to try to force the Government to rethink it’s proposals and I will continue to work closely with the unions on this ‘.
