Labour MP says VAT increases have cost Jobs
Labour MP Sandra Osborne has says she has received a shock report which shows that one in five small building firms in the UK have been forced to cut jobs as a direct result of last years VAT increase.
Sandra said:
My office has recently received details of a report from the Federation of Master Builders which indicates that the VAT increase is hurting the very small businesses that the Government is looking to for economic growth. The report from the Federation of Master Builders actually refers to research which shows that nearly 4000 jobs were lost in the housing repair and maintenance market last year as a result of the rise in VAT.
Sandra said:
I feared that when the Government raised the rate of VAT to 20 per cent last year that it would suppress demand for building work and cost jobs and unfortunately it looks as though these fears were fully justified. It is now crystal clear that the Government needs to temporarily reverse the rise in VAT as one way of helping to get the economy moving again. In the light of this report my constituents can rest assured that I will continue to do everything I can to get a temporary cut in VAT during these very dark and depressing economic times.
