Local MP Welcomes Retention of HMRC Office in Ayrshire
Sandra Osborne, MP has welcomed this weeks’ announcement that the HM Revenue & Customs’ Marress House in Irvine will remain open following a review originally proposed in January this year, which would lead to office closures and office rationalisations. The Department aims to cut 10,000 jobs by 2014/15 in spite of the public accounts committee reporting that £1.1 billion of unpaid tax could have been collected if it was not for job cuts.

‘When they closed the Ayr office, assurances were given that jobs would be retained at Marress House in Irvine. The decision to keep the Irvine office open comes after months of campaigning by the union, with the assistance of MPs. The Irvine office is one of only 5 to be retained out of 17 proposed for closure last January, It is obviously very welcome news for my constituents who are among 62 staff who work there, but the closures overall do not make economic sense at a time when the Chancellor has admitted that a massive £25 billion annually is lost through tax avoidance’.
