Saving NHS

'I was proud to join my Labour colleagues last Friday when we ensured that the House of Commons voted by a huge margin to halt NHS privatisation in England . The Tory Government should now let Clive Efford's Private Member's Bill proceed. Anything else would be an abuse of power.

'It's really important to point out that the only parts of Clive’s Bill which apply to the whole of the UK are clauses relating to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). One of the main aims of TTIP is to open up Europe’s public health, education and water services to US companies. This could essentially mean the privatisation of the NHS. This Bill has as its main aim to protect the NHS from privatisation in England. Here in Scotland (with minor exceptions) thanks to Devolution, the NHS is solely under the control of the Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament and thus any decisions on privatisation can only be made by them.'
