Local Labour MP, Sandra Osborne and Labour’s Scottish Parliament Candidate for Carrick Cumnock and Doon Valley, Richard Leonard have joined to bitterly condemn the Conservative/Liberal coalition government's plans for the privatisation of the Royal Mail.
Sandra said:
“The Government’s plans to privatise Royal Mail pose a very real threat to local post offices because their Postal Services Bill will end the historic link between the Royal Mail and Post Office Limited. Currently, the Royal Mail has an agreement to use the post office network for its counter services. With this Bill, a privatised Royal Mail could choose to use other outlets for its counter services, such as supermarkets or a high street chain, and could easily cut down the number of outlets to town centres only .This would deprive the post office network of up to a third of its income, and would put thousands of post offices at risk.”
Richard Leonard, Labour’s Scottish Parliament candidate for Carrick Cumnock and Doon Valley added:
“To put this vital public service in the hands of private monopolies at the very time when big private monopolies have brought the entire economic system to its knees would be not just a mistake but a tragedy.
People living in rural parts of Carrick Cumnock and Doon Valley will be the biggest losers with axed services, higher costs and fewer alternatives. We need to fight this all the way.”
Sandra and Richard are committed to campaigning vigorously along with the Communications Workers Union on the Keep the Post Public Campaign
