Labour MP organises debate on Poverty in Scotland
Local Labour MP Sandra Osborne organised a recent House of Commons debate on Poverty in Scotland . The debate took place on November 30 th on St Andrews Day and Sandra opened the debate followed by contributions by Members of Parliament from across the country.
In her opening speech Sandra illustrated the problem of poverty levels in Scotland by highlighting research by the well respected Child Poverty Action Group which indicates that nearly a million people in Scotland are currently living in poverty.
Sandra said:
It is appalling that nearly a million people which is almost 20 per cent of the Scottish population are currently living in poverty. If people are living in poverty it means going without basics and often falling into debt.
During her speech Sandra called for a number of measures to kick start growth and get jobs into the economy. Among these measures was a 2 billion tax on bank bonuses to fund 100,000 jobs for young people and build 25,000 more affordable homes.
Sandra concluded by saying:
The main purpose of the debate was to get some ideas on the table for addressing the massive problem of poverty and low wages in Scotland. However as Local MP I will also continue to fight for policies which help us rebuild the economy and improve the very difficult position that so many people find themselves in at the present time.
