Postal service consultation
The newly appointed Postal Services regulator, Ofcom, has launched a consultation into proposals for the future of the postal service. The consultation runs from 20th October up to 5thJanuary next year.
Ofcom assumed responsibility for the regulation of postal services on 3rd October. Its fundamental duty, as
set out in the Postal Services Act 2011, is to secure a financially sustainable universal postal service. A one of its first acts in its new role, Ofcom is proposing to permit Royal Mail freedom to set the majority of its own prices, while also imposing a safeguard price cap on 2nd class stamps.
Local Labour MP Sandra Osborne today urged a strong response to the consultation from concerned constituents.
Said Sandra:
“I am dismayed by this proposal. This seems to be a case of 2ndClass stamps for 2nd Class
citizens!”
She added:
“This is part of a wider consultation document which demands a strong response. I will be making my own submission but I would also urge concerned constituents to look at these proposals and to make their views known.”
