MP Speaks Out Against Closure of Ayr Industrial Injuries Benefit Centre
Sandra Osborne MP has today attacked the Government over its decision to close Ayr Industrial Injuries Benefit Centre (in Jobcentre Plus, John Street, Ayr). The Government has today announced that the Ayr Industrial Injuries Benefit Centre will close early next year.
Sandra said:
‘The job losses at the Ayr Industrial Injuries Benefit Centre is a serious blow and I am particularly angry since I fought under the last Government to keep the Centre in Ayr. The Minister has informed me that it involves 53 job losses including 43 permanent posts. He advised that it is hoped that about half will be redeployed to either Kilmarnock or Paisley depending on where they live. Others will be offered redundancies or a job elsewhere if they are prepared to move and they will be supported in this.’
The Ayr Industrial Injuries Benefit Centre is a call centre and does not affect Jobcentre services in Ayr. Sandra said ‘I am informed that today’s announcement does not affect the services offered face to face to customers in Jobcentres - ‘our Jobcentres will remain central to our operation’ (Henrietta Wright, District Manager, Jobcentre Plus).
Sandra added:
‘This is part of the cuts to public expenditure which the Tory/Liberal Democrat Coalition are making. I have been in contact with the unions and will continue to work with them to fight the job losses.’
