Labour MP attacks possible Housing Benefit Changes
Labour MP Sandra Osborne has launched an attack on the Housing Benefit proposals contained within the Welfare Reform Bill which the Government are trying to push through the House of Commons at the present
time.
Sandra said:
I am concerned about the implications for people on Housing Benefit arising from the Con Dem Welfare Reform Bill . I am very worried that it is proposed within this ill advised bill that housing benefit claims would be dealt with either online or from a telephone service in future.
Sandra said:
I frankly do not believe that those needing support would get it from this new service proposed by the Con Dem Government. If these proposals go through I can see people losing Housing Benefit or having it reduced as the new system struggles to cope.
Sandra said that she was also concerned about the staff currently delivering housing benefit services within local councils:
Sandra said :
Local Housing Benefit staff are the local experts in housing matters and they deserve to be treated fairly and decently if any changes are to be introduced to the way Housing Benefit is organised. I am afraid that the Government proposals leave more questions than answers and this is why I will be opposing the legislation when it is next discussed in Parliament.
