Local MP Sandra Osborne is calling for as many local nominations as possible to be baton carriers when the Commonwealth Games 2014 Queen's Baton passes through Ayrshire next summer.
She said,
"You don't have to wait until the Opening Ceremony to start the celebrations. The Queen's Baton Relay has already begun its epic journey through the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. It won't be too long before the baton returns to Scotland – and local volunteers are needed to be a part of its final journey!
The baton holding Her Majesty The Queen's Message to the athletes will cross continents, terrain and time zones. We can be proud that each country it passes through will be presented with a gift of the detachable granite gemstone tip from the Ailsa Craig. Once it has completed its journey through the Commonwealth the baton will come home to Scotland on 14 June 2014 to spend 40 days visiting communities in all 32 Local Authority areas. On 20 June it will pass through South Ayrshire and on 21June through East Ayrshire.
The Games organisers need 100 baton bearers to in each local authority area. You can nominate a family member, friend or someone you know for a position as a community baton bearer – or you can apply yourself. Baton bearers should be people who have made a significant contribution to the local community, and we have plenty to pick from in Ayrshire"
Note to editor:
Nominated community baton bearers will be required to meet one or more of the following criteria for activities undertaken whilst having been a resident or working in Scotland.
You must have consent from the person you want to nominate along with their current email address.
You will be asked to describe in 100 words or less, why this person meets one or more of the six selection criteria to be eligible as a community batonbearer.
See Games website for full details.
