Following the recent announcement by Scottish Coal, Sandra Osborne, MP for Ayr, Carrick & Cumnock Constituency commented as follows:
‘This is a devastating blow to the workforce and the local community. The opencast industry has been struggling for some time due to cheap imports and I have been fearful that something like this would happen however, the potential is there for a more positive future. It is therefore vital that the Scottish Government steps in with assistance to get over the short term cash flow problem to keep redundancies to a minimum and ensure that any mothballed mines are reopened as soon as possible.
I have also raised this with the Westminster Government.’
