MP Calls on Government to Ban Use of Wild Animals in Circuses
Sandra Osborne, MP for Ayr Carrick and Cumnock, has today called on the Government to use it’s powers under Section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to introduce a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses.
Sandra said:
‘Animal welfare is an issue that concerns many of my constituents and a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses is a matter I have raised with the Government time and time again. ‘When the Labour Party was in Government, it held a public consultation on the use of wild animals in circuses. Ten thousand replies were received and 94% of respondents supported a ban. This should send a clear message to the Government – it’s time to end this outdated practice.‘I am calling on the Government to use its powers under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to introduce a regulation banning the use of all wild animals in circuses without delay and I have signed an Early Day Motion in Parliament to this effect.’
