Sandra Osborne MP Calls for an Independent Public Inquiry into the Big Six Energy Companies
Ayr Carrick and Cumnock MP Sandra Osborne has joined forces with over 70 organisations and individuals to call for action by the Government on the excessive profiteering of the big six energy companies. The campaign is calling for a levy to be imposed similar to that imposed on the oil companies. It also calls for revenues from the levy to be ring fenced to provide immediate help to those living in fuel poverty, and for the launch of an independent public inquiry into the big six energy companies.
Sandra Osborne said:
‘Energy suppliers are continuing to overcharge and make huge profits at the expense of those on lower and middle incomes. For the first half of 2011 alone the big six energy companies made almost £10 bn in profit and OFGEM have revealed that these companies have increased their profit margins for dual-fuel deals by a staggering 733% (from £15 to £125 per household).
‘It is a scandal that there are an estimated 4.1 million people now living in fuel poverty, according to a recent Government report, with another 400,000 forced into it with every 10% price hike.’
Sandra added
‘I am happy to support this campaign to see an end to the big six energy fix and will continue to press the Government to take action to bring these suppliers to account’.
